It’s a rare thing indeed when every single person on the entire planet has the same thing on his or her mind. That’s what’s happening now, though, with the COVID-19 pandemic that’s affecting everyone, everywhere. Unfortunately, when terrible situations like this arise, it can and often does have an extremely deleterious effect on the economy overall. Early indications are that this is what’s happening in the United States, which is making a lot of small business owners rightly nervous.
However, it’s times like these that should remind all of us why small business is important. Growing a small business is a tremendous accomplishment, and it’s something that the team of professionals at VipeCloud have been helping clients do for years. Growing small businesses is one of our specialties, and below you’ll see a few ideas on how this can still happen, even during a difficult time.

Understand Your Reality
These days, office buildings across the United States are closed. There are no in-person meetings. People are not flying to different markets. That’s just the way it is, so the idea of thinking about how small businesses grow right now may seem like a strange one. That said, this also means that your potential customers, instead of being out and about and rarely available, are at home. They are stationary. Their meetings occur virtually. They can see what you send them and may have more time to review what is sent. This matters, so take the current context into consideration when putting a marketing and sales plan together.
Give Instead of Sell
Regardless of the business you’re in, it involves selling on some level. That’s how it is with every business. Riding on the coattails of the point above, you still need to understand your reality and acknowledge that people really don’t want to be “sold” right now in most cases. Instead, an idea for how to grow your small business could include giving in your community instead of selling. That’s easier for some industries than others, but if you offer your product at a discount, for instance, and state that it’s because you want to help during this difficult time, that smaller margin could lead to much bigger things down the road.
Be Ready to Adjust
One of the fundamental ways of how small businesses grow is their willingness and ability to pivot and respond to changing circumstances. That can be difficult for larger organizations. The need to adjust what your plan and messaging are is intense right now, as every day seems to bring more news, more information and more possibilities for what could happen in the near future. You need to be ready to pull whatever message you were going to send that day and change it to fit the new situation. You need to make sure you’re up to date with the environment in which you’re operating, as it’s changing quickly.
